# Grow your customer list

> Most people who visit you leave no way to reach them. This is the campaign that fixes that, and it works on complete strangers.

Almost everything else in Hamla needs a way to reach someone — an email, a phone number. Which means almost everything else only works on people you already know.

Popups are the exception. They need no contact details at all, because they run on your own site in front of whoever is standing there. That makes list growth the first campaign to run if your list is thin, and the one everything else depends on.

## What you need

* **The script tag on your site.** One line, and it is what lets Hamla see visitors at all
* **Popups**, on the Free plan. The Free plan runs one popup at a time; Starter runs ten
* Something worth trading for. See below — this is the part that decides whether it works

## Set it up

> Show a popup to visitors who scroll halfway down the page, offering 10% off for their email

Halfway down is deliberate. Someone who has scrolled has decided your page is worth reading; someone who lands and gets a popup in their face has decided nothing yet.

If you would rather catch people on the way out:

> Show a popup when a visitor moves to leave, offering the guide in exchange for an email

## What you are actually trading

Nobody gives you their email for "updates". They give it for something specific they want right now.

| Works                                                            | Why                                                  |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| A discount on the thing they are already looking at | Immediate, obvious, they were half-decided anyway |
| The thing they came to find — a price list, a menu, a size guide | You are removing the reason they were about to leave |
| First access to something genuinely scarce | Only if it is genuinely scarce |

| Does not work                                | Why                                                         |
| -------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Join our newsletter" | You have described the cost, not the benefit |
| A discount so large it trains people to wait | You just taught your best customers to never pay full price |

<Note>
  **Ask for one thing.** Every extra field costs you signups. Email alone, or phone alone — whichever you will actually use. You can learn their name later.
</Note>

## What actually happens

The popup shows, they enter an email, and they become a contact. From that moment they can be included in every other campaign — the welcome series, the win-back, the launch announcement.

Consent is part of the capture, not an afterthought. Someone who gave you an email through a popup has agreed to hear from you, and that is recorded with them.

## Launch it

> Launch the email capture popup

Then it sits on your site and works on every visitor from now on.

## Check on it

> How many contacts did the popup capture this week?

Watch **captures**, not impressions. A popup shown ten thousand times that captured nine people is not a traffic problem, it is an offer problem — change what you are trading before you change anything else.
